Gibraltar Dec 12

gibraltar 300x237 GibraltarGibraltar is a British overseas territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula and the tip of Europe at the entrance of the Mediterranean overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. The territory covers 6.843 square kilometres (2.642 sq mi) and shares a land border with Spain (La Linea de la Concepcion to the north.

Gibraltar has historically been an important base for the British Armed Forces and is the site of a Royal Navy base.

It may be a tiny area, but Gibraltar has a lot to offer. The Rock of Gibraltar itself looks over the area, standing nearly 430 meters (1,400 feet) high.

Tourists enjoy the cheap alcohol and tobacco available because of the Rock’s tax-free status.

And of course there are the famous apes. They were brought over from North Africa by British soldiers, and now roam freely on the Rock.

There is evidence of human habitation in Gibraltar going as far back as Neanderthal man, an extinct species of the genus Homo. Within recorded history, the first inhabitants were the Phoenicians, around 950 BC. Subsequently, Gibraltar became known as one of the Pillars of Hercules, after the Greek legend of the creation of the Strait of Gibraltar. The Carthaginians and Romans also established semi-permanent settlements.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Gibraltar came briefly under the control of the Vandals. The area later formed part of the Visigothic Kingdom of Hispania until the Kingdom’s collapse from the Muslim conquest in 711 AD.

Mount Everest Base Camp, Nepal and Tibet Dec 05

2 300x224 Mount Everest Base Camp, Nepal and TibetThere are two base camps on opposite sides of Mt. Everest: to the South in Nepal, and to the North in Tibet. Located at the altitude of 5,360 metres (17,600 ft) is South Base Camp in Nepal. and at 5,208 metres (17,090 ft) is the North Base Camp in Tibet .

These camps are rudimentary campsites on Mount Everest that are used by mountain climbers during their ascent and descent. South Base Camp is used when climbing via the southeast ridge, while North Base Camp is used when climbing via the northeast ridge.

Supplies are carried to the camps by sherpas or porters, and with help of animals. The North Base Camp has vehicle access (at least in the summer months). Climbers typically rest at base camp for several days for acclimatization; to reduce the risks and severity of altitude sickness. Base camps usually consist of long lines of tents with food, blankets, and light.

As of 2002, a visit to the North (Tibet-side) Base Camp required a permit from the Chinese government, above and beyond the permit required to visit Tibet itself. At this time such permits could be arranged relatively easily via travel companies in Lhasa, typically as part of a travel package that included hiring a vehicle, driver, and translator. Road access to the North Base Camp may be obtained from a road branching to the South from the Friendship Highway.

The trek to Everest Base Camp on the Nepal side is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas and is visited by thousands of trekkers each year.

Noordhoek beach, Cape Town, South Africa Dec 05

Noordhoek Beach Cape Town South Africa 1 300x224 Noordhoek beach, Cape Town, South AfricaNoordhoek is a suburb of Cape Town, South Africa, located below Chapman’s Peak on the west coast of the Cape Peninsula, approximately thirty-five kilometres to the south of the city itself. The name “Noordhoek” was taken from Dutch and literally means “north corner”. It is best-known for its picturesque shoreline and its long, wide, sandy beach, which stretches south to the neighbouring village of Kommetjie. Near the southern end of this beach is the wreck of the steamship “Kakapo”, which ran aground about a century ago when the captain mistook Chapmans’ Peak for the Cape of Good Hope and put the helm over to port. Noordhoek can be accessed either from the spectacular scenic coastal road , Chapman’s Peak Drive, which leads out of Hout Bay or via the mountain road Ou Kaapse Weg which cuts through the beautiful Silvermine Nature reserve – now part of the Table Mountain National Park. Noordhoek is a small scattered community of nice houses, often with sea views and has a large horse population as riding on the long sandy beach is a great attraction. Many artists live in Noordhoek.
